Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy. Henry " Hank " Mobley (July 7, 1930 - May 30, 1986) was an American tenor saxophonist and composer. [1] Mobley was described by Leonard Feather as the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone", [2] a metaphor used to describe his tone, that was neither as aggressive as John Coltrane nor as mellow as Lester.

You can hear this in the Prestige LP Mobley's Message, in which tenor man Hank Mobley runs through six tunes with a small group. The turmoil the rhythm section sets up and the close-to-the-beat driving swing are perfect examples of the current hard-swinging style in New York. The return to positivism in swinging is ambivalent, however.

When Mobley's Message was released in 1956, Hank Mobley had just turned 26 years old. It was his fifth recording as a leader that started 14 months earlier in March 1955, when Blue Note (which was to become his major label) issued The Hank Mobley Quartet. That album was followed in rapid succession in the following year by albums for Prestige.
